NEW CHURH OF ST. JOSEPH NEW CHURH OF ST. JOSEPH at JFK Catholic High School, Somers, NY |
The sense of belonging to a community can be developed and nurtured in many different ways. The Parish of St. Joseph saw a need for a larger church to bring all of their parishioners together under one roof. With ample land available at JFK Catholic High School Campus, a feasibility study was undertaken to determine if a new church could be located on the high school property. When the feasibility study confirmed the church could be added to the site, design for the 35,000 square foot Parish complex overlooking the New Croton Reservoir began in earnest.
DCAK-MSA Architecture, working in close collaboration with Rev. Msgr. James Moore and his parishioners, planned a new 800 seat church on a level land, on the south end of the property. When it is completed, the project will include relocation of athletic fields for the school and environmental improvements to the overall site, in addition to the new ecclesiastical complex that the parishioners of St. Joseph have been patiently awaiting for many years.
The project is currently under review of the Somers Planning Board. Construction is slated to begin shortly after all the required municipal approvals are granted. The building is being designed to incorporate the latest Green building technologies and water treatment procedures, in keeping with the church's mission to be good sheppard of the earth's resources. |
MAVIS TIRE ACQUIRES COLE MUFFLER |
In this issue of E-News we feature the commercial renovations designed by DCAK-MSA Architecture for Mavis Discount Tire. Mavis Discount Tire Corporation, a Westchester County based family-owned business, has acquired an upstate New York automotive service group, Cole's Muffler Brake Inc. This acquisition expands the Mavis Tire presence upstate with the addition of 47 new locations. The locations are particularly well suited to Mavis Tire since both companies have focused on light automotive repairs, providing service on tires, exhaust system, brakes, oil changes and inspections.
Upon acquiring the 47 stores, Mavis Tire, building on over a 15 year professional relationship with our firm, engaged DCAK-MSA to quickly, but at low cost, develop and implement a design program to upgrade the Cole facilities to meet Mavis Tires' standards. Working closely with the Mavis development group, we developed a Retail Updates Program for the Cole "make-over's" using simple, efficient design elements to satisfy the clients' tight schedule. The designs minimize cost and reduce store downtime by utilizing visually dynamic, yet easily adjusted prefabricated components which could be quickly modified to suit each separate location. Because of the simplicity and flexibility of the Retail Updates Program total architectural and engineering fees have been held under $5,000 per location and continue to drop as DCAK-MSA further refines the program with each new location. Using the programmed standards, architectural drawings are prepared for each store. The drawings typically include modifications to the front facade, interior renovations for the showroom and service bays, new wall and pylon signs, and new decorative landscaping and exterior lighting. The new Mavis locations continue to reflect the style and spirit of the original Mavis Discount Tire Stores built almost 40 years ago, while creating the modern, state-of-the-art service centers which have made Mavis Tire a leader in their industry. DCAK-MSA's Retail Updates Program is helping Mavis Tire successfully bring their unique brand of service and customer support to an ever-widening audience.
