BROOKHAVEN CALABRO AIRPORT |
Brookhaven Calabro Airport, located on Long Island in Suffolk, New York State's easternmost County, in compliance with FAA advisory, NYS Building Codes and local regulations, is currently undergoing rehabilitation by DCAK-MSA. |
During WWII the US Army Air Force (USAAF) established numerous airfields in New York for training pilots and USAAF fighters and bombers. Many of these were converted into municipal airports. The Brookhaven Calabro Airport, was known during wartime as the Mastic Flight Strip. Originally constructed to provide logistical support for U.S. Army Air Corps operations, title of the air strip was transferred to New York State after the war and finally to the Town of Brookhaven in 1961. The former wartime airport now encompasses more than 600 acres and handles more than 60,000 annual aircraft operations. |
In 2013 the airport contracted the engineering firm of Savik and Murray (now part of DCAK-MSA) to devise a comprehensive Construction Safety and Phasing Plan (CSPP), including the coordination of runway closures during renovations. Survey, design and construction-oversight of the project were divided into three phases. Phase 1 & 2 the airport renovation have been completed to date with Phase 3 underway from 2015. |
Replacement airports $3.3 million taxiway lighting system to increase visibility and safety for pilots. |
Phase 1 included replacement of the airports $3.3 million taxiway lighting system to increase visibility and safety for pilots during takeoff and landing. This entailed the replacement of existing deteriorated Taxiway Edge Lights with new Runway End Indicator Lights (REILs) and Precision Approach Path Indicators (PAPIs) as well as installation of a new radio receiver/controller with pole-mounted antenna to allow for pilot control of the airport lighting system. Excavation of existing cables and replacement of cables in conduit, with electrical vault upgrades, restoration and installation of a new Constant Current Regulator (CCR) to power the new system, and the design of new informational signs are central to completion of the project. |
SHORE ROAD FISHING DOCK - aka "Stone Dock" |
Reconstruction of an historical dock located in the Village of Babylon, NY was recently completed (2015) by the Savik & Murray division of DCAK-MSA. The deteriorated dock known as the Shore Road or "Stone Dock" dates back to the mid-1800's when it was used for freight shipping and for ferrying passengers to the L.I.'s outer islands (including Oak Island, Muncy Island, and Captree Islands). The dock underwent a reconstruction by our firm and can now be enjoyed by locals and visitors for fishing, resting, socializing and contemplation from one of the dock's new benches. |
Following the devastation of Hurricane Sandy, the Village of Babylon saw the need to rebuild the iconic dock. The Savik & Murray division of DCAK-MSA was hired to assess the dock's condition and to develop design plans and details for its reconstruction. Due to its important historical significance, precautions were taken to protect the existing concrete wall from damage during reconstruction. The design plan incorporated additional vinyl sheet piling with concrete infill to stabilize the existing wall while allowing the wall to remain in it original configuration as seen from the deck surface. All structural members, piling and decking were removed and replaced to the same dimensions as what had existed in the past with upgraded material specifications. |
